Guernsey Post’s Yearbook celebrates a year of stamps: The Wombles, royal anniversaries & Great War to feature in 2018 programme

Guernsey Post is delighted to announce the launch of its 2017 Yearbook and details of its 2018 stamp programme for Guernsey and Alderney.

The Yearbook, which contains all of this year’s Guernsey and Alderney issue stamps, souvenir and miniature sheets, includes the fourth installment in the philatelic bureau’s Lunar New Year series with stamps depicting the Year of the Rooster and, in conjunction with the WWF, stamps featuring the wonderful Meadow Pipit on the theme of Endangered Species.

Stamps featuring the Archipelago Sheet of Alderney & Burhou, created by gifted architect Addison “Roger” Warren, 1st edition, 60 years after it was first published, are also included, along with stamps celebrating the island’s beauty for its Alderney Scenes issue.

On the theme of Local Handcrafts, Guernsey’s Sepac stamps illustrate the locally produced Guernsey jumper complete with jumper-shaped perforations. Its Europa stamp issue on Castles features the wonderfully preserved Castle Cornet.

Heat sensitive stamps that remove the eclipses upon coming into contact with warm hands were issued to mark the first total solar eclipse visible from the continental United States in almost four decades. Guernsey’s stamps depict the locations of six Coastal Eclipses where partial eclipses could be seen by millions of observers outside of the path, including Alderney.

The Yearbook also features highly illustrative depictions of fascinating Guernsey Folklore stamps to mark the creation of a new Folklore Gallery at Guernsey Museum; commemorative stamps for the 25th anniversary of The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR) including a miniature sheet depicting Diana, Princess of Wales, the Regiment’s first Colonel-in-Chief; and self-stick stamps showcasing the wonderful coasts of Guernsey.

Other commemorative issues include the bureau’s fourth set of stamps in its five-year series – Stories from the Great War, which explores Guernsey’s links to The Great War in the Air, along with stamps to mark the occasion of the 70th wedding anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness, Duke of Edinburgh.

Completing this year’s programme the Yearbook also contains the ever popular Christmas stamps, which this year provide a new interpretation of two popular Christmas carols – Good King Wenceslas (Guernsey) and The Holly & the Ivy (Alderney).

Guernsey Post’s head of philatelic, Bridget Yabsley said: “Our Yearbook, produced in full colour and bound into a high quality hard backed cover, is a beautiful item containing our entire stamp issues, which are provided in separate glassine bags so they can be placed into the affixed mounts at leisure. Priced at £76.87 – the exact value of the stamps it contains – the Yearbook is great value for money and a wonderful Christmas gift.

“We are very proud to share details of next year’s stamp programme and hope that our customers will agree that, once again, we have worked hard to deliver an innovative, rich and varied programme for 2018, designed to appeal both to established collectors and those who are interested in particular subjects. As ever, we’ll be working with a range of designers and artists who can bring their individual style and creativity to the stamps.”
