Jersey Opera House – 125 Years

This year the Jersey Opera House celebrates its 125-year anniversary. In honour of this fantastic milestone, Jersey Post has issued a set of six stamps, beautifully illustrated by local artist Abi Overland who took inspiration from the building to create the complimentary colour pallet and intricate linework for each stamp.

Available from Monday 30 June 2025, the first stamp in the issue is a detailed portrait of Adolphus Curry the local architect who was instrumental in providing the design for the Opera House’s iconic features including the exquisite façade.

Lillie Langtry was a famous actress who was part of the first performance held at the Opera House. She played a leading role in ‘The Degenerates’, which was commended at the time to be a huge success.

The iconic chandelier stamp includes a black backdrop to replicate the dramatic atmosphere the chandelier generates before a show.

To celebrate the end of the occupation of Jersey, the Opera House held a V.E Grand Variety Show. Recently freed prisoners of war from allied countries as well as islanders were amongst those who performed and attended the event.

In 1957, the Opera House was used as a cinema. During the course of its history, jockeys brought their horses into the theatre to view horse races in order to gauge the reaction from their equine. Unsurprisingly, this training method wasn’t successful and was later scrapped.

The final stamp celebrates the return of the Opera House after an extensive refurbishment that began in 2023. This year the Opera House plans to begin opening its doors for a variety of performances.

Special acknowledgement to the wonderful team from the Jersey Opera House, who kindly helped us with the research into this issue. The stamp set and products are available to order online at https://jerseystamps.com/ and will be available to purchase in Broad Street Post Office and Jersey Post’s Headquarters in Rue Des Pres.
