About Luxembourg
Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in the heart of Western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. With a population of just over half a million people and an area of about 2,586 square kilometres, it is one of Europe’s smallest nations, yet it holds a distinctive place in the region.
The country is ruled by a Grand Duke and is the world’s only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. Luxembourg has a highly developed economy, and its capital, Luxembourg City, is known for its prosperity as well as its dramatic setting above deep river valleys. The city’s historic fortifications, elegant buildings and blend of architectural styles reflect centuries of cultural exchange. Luxembourg has long been a crossroads where different European traditions meet, and this mixture has shaped a rich and recognisable heritage.
Beyond the capital, the landscape ranges from the forested hills and rocky plateaus of the north to the gentler countryside and vineyards of the south. Castles, villages and natural parks contribute to a sense of place that is both historic and welcoming, with a character that feels distinctly its own.
Luxembourg’s cultural life, languages and traditions all reflect its position at the meeting point of several European influences, giving the country a depth and variety that belies its small size.
