About Monaco
The Principality of Monaco is located on the French Riviera between Nice and the Italian border. It is the second smallest state in the world after the Vatican, yet it has a long and distinctive history. The ruling Grimaldi family first established itself in Monaco in 1297, and the principality has maintained its identity ever since.
Monaco is known for its stability, its prosperity and its unique position on the Mediterranean coast. Its economy is highly developed, and its social model has contributed to a strong sense of continuity and confidence in the future. The principality is home to residents from more than one hundred and twenty nationalities, all drawn by its quality of life, its mild climate and its cosmopolitan character.
The cultural life of Monaco is lively and varied, with museums, festivals, sporting events and a long standing commitment to environmental stewardship. Despite its small size, the principality offers a remarkable blend of coastal scenery, urban sophistication and Mediterranean charm.
