Iceland – Europa Stamps 2018 – Bridges

The theme for Europa stamps 2018 is Bridges.

Both structures chosen to feature on the Icelandic stamps are contemporary : the footbridges over the Elliðaár estuary, inaugurated in 2013, and slightly further in time, the suspended bridge over Jökulsá river on Breiðamerkursandur.

Mentalities are changing – increasingly people are looking towards more reasoned, positive and sustainable means of transportation in the city. Reykjavík citizens are gradually giving up driving for the benefit of cycling, walking or public transport.
The municipality of Reykjavík encourages this trend : to that effect, an extensive network of footpaths has been established throughout the capital area. The network is a collaborative project between the city of Reykjavík and the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

The footbridges over the Elliðaár estuary are a result of that collaborative work.
Designed as a pair of hollow red pyramids, the bridges are 4,5 m wide and 36 m long, with a support structure 18 m in height. They lie across the tidal estuary of Elliðaár (which splits into two, hence the presence of two bridges!) and connect the pedestrian and cycle routes along the coastline of Geirsnef peninsula and its surroundings.

The bridge over Jökulsá river on Breiðamerkursandur. Only 500 meters long, the river Jökulsá on the black sands of Breiðamerkursandur in the South of Iceland is one of the shortest rivers in the whole of the country. However, always had a reputation for being one of the country’s most difficult glacial rivers to cross : not only did the river’s course change often and unexpectedly, but there were also strong currents and the river carried icebergs and ice clumps from the nearby glacier!

The bridge over Jökulsá was therefore more than welcome when it was finally finished in 1967. It is a suspension bridge – this type of structure has cables suspended between towers and vertical suspender cables carrying the weight of the deck below. It is one of the largest bridge constructions on Iceland, almost 110 meters between towers.
