Total Solar Eclipse Over Eastern Greenland - A Celestial Moment on Stamps

On 12th August 2026, one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena will occur over Greenland. A total solar eclipse will move across the Arctic world and Eastern Greenland, in particular, will be one of the places on the planet where the experience will be most spectacular. This rare event is now immortalised on a new Greenlandic stamp issued on the day of the eclipse.

When the Moon passes precisely between the Earth and the Sun day turns into night for a few magical minutes. The sun’s radiant disc is completely obscured and its outer atmosphere, the corona, appears as a luminous wreath around the dark silhouette of the moon. For astronomers, photographers and nature enthusiasts, a total solar eclipse is one of the most desirable experiences imaginable.

Eastern Greenland is an exceptional location for this event. The region is centrally situated on the path of the eclipse and is, therefore, expected to attract visitors from all over the world. Here, Arctic nature meets the dramatic transformations in the sky to create a sight that can only be experienced few times in a lifetime.

This new stamp conveys perfectly this rare combina- tion of science, nature and experience. The design was created by Malene Guldager who, with a tremendous sense of mood and composition, has captured the moment when the light of the Sun is obscured by the passage of the Moon. The stamp combines astronomical precision with a poetic expression that underscores the almost celestial nature of the event.

The issue also marks the launch of a new voice in Greenlandic stamp art. This is Malene Guldager’s debut as a stamp artist and the result demonstrates how the small format can still accommodate broader narratives. The design of the stamp invites collectors and users alike to gaze up to the sky and commemorate a day when the forces of nature created one of most fascinating scenes we know. Consequently, the stamp not only represents a memory of an astronomical event but, also an artistic document of a moment when Greenland stands at the centre of the world’s attention.

Malene Guldager is a trained graphic designer and a visual art graduate of Aarhus Art Academy. Through her work, she explores the dynamic tension between graphic design, illustration and visual art, where precision and atmosphere go hand in hand.

Her works incorporate her interest in natural forms, the effects of light and the narratives arising from encounters between people and the landscape. Her artistic expression is characterised by a confident composition, a well developed understanding of colour and an ability to create images with both tranquillity and depth.
