MaltaPost issued a set of four stamps depicting four vessels which reflect the importance of maritime activities in Malta's economic development and security.
Malta's strategic geographic location, at the crossrosds of major shipping routes, together with its deep and protected harbours, has allowed the Island to develop into a maritime hub in the centre of the Mediterranean. Valletta Grand Harbour has been the focus of maritime activities in Malta from before the time of the Knights and, since 1988, Malta Freeport has grown into one of the largest transhipment hubs in the Mediterranean region.
