This year’s Åland Sepac stamp captures nature’s drama

frim_sepac2018

9 May sees the next issue from Åland Post in the Sepac series of stamps issued by small European posts. The joint 2018 theme is Spectacular views and, with the sea as next-door neighbour, Åland Post chose to illustrate the breathtaking scenery of waves breaking against the cliffs.

Åland nature photographer Niclas Nordlund captured the spectacular stamp photo at Hammarudda, located some 9 kilometres west of Mariehamn on a December afternoon. Niclas focuses on nature motifs with seabirds as his favourite choice of motif. He happily remains in the Mariehamn surroundings. Hammarudda is a favourite spot, Geta in northern Åland another; both are locations where the unremitting forces of the sea may be experienced.

The Åland landscape displays great diversity ranging from barren skerries to forests and fertile cultivated land on the main island. With a patchwork archipelago of more than 6500 islands and skerries, water forms almost 90 % of the total area.
